In 1780 the Hiatt handcuff was first manufactured as "Prisoners Handcuffs to the Trade." By the early 19th century, Hiatt products were used extensively throughout the countries under British influence and are still used by the Metropolitan Police Force of Greater London. Currently, Hiatt products are also used by many major departments throughout the United States.
The basic principles of handcuffing have not materially changed, however, designs have evolved so that handcuffs can be applied with speed and confidence to minimize risk of injury to both the user and the suspect. They continue to develop innovative products to support the men and women of law enforcement.
