What is a Hammock?

A Hammock is defined as a hanging bed or couch made of canvas, netted cord, or the like, with ropes often reinforced with metal, attached to supports at each end. Hammocks can be used for camping, sleeping, sitting, or just simply relaxing. They come in a wide range of materials, sizes, and styles. Also, depending on the material, many hammocks are water resistant so there are no worries about leaving them outdoors. When looking to buy a hammock it is important to be informed and knowledgeable about the product before making a purchasing decision.

Different Types of Hammock Fabric

Cotton - The most traditional and perhaps the most comfortable type of hammock is one made of cotton. The cotton material allows the hammock to form to every body type, is soft in texture and its three layers are joined to create a very tough, durable product. However, because cotton is not water resistant, it should be brought indoors during winter and bad weather conditions. Doing this will help keep the simplicity and elegance of the color from fading through rainy weather and constant direct sunlight.

Polyester - Although polyester isn’t quite as pliable as cotton, it allows for a longer lasting hammock because of its ability to combat mold, mildew, high humidity, rain, saltwater and sunlight. Polyester hammocks tend to be more firm and keep their shape longer then their cotton counterparts. With only a minimal difference in softness, polyester hammocks are one of the most popular choices, but caution should still be taken when considering leaving it outside for long periods of time.

How to hang a Hammock

When you have selected your hammock it is important to know where and how you will hang it. Although most require little to no set up, it is necessary to get the proper stand or hooks for the type of hammock your are purchasing. There are two common ways of hanging your hammock, with Hammock Straps and Hammock Stands.

Hammocks, Bliss Hammock HA-505 Hammock Straps - If you are going to take the traditional approach and use Mother Nature to hold your hammock you will need to purchase Hammock Straps. These are portable straps that simply wrap around the tree and then hook on to the ends of the hammock. Besides being quick and easy to set up, these straps allow you to install your hammock virtually anywhere.

Hammocks, Bliss Hammock BHS-416 Hammock Stands - If you are like most people, not fortunate enough to have the ideal place in your backyard to set up your hammock between two trees, then getting a stand is the route you will probably want to take. Most Hammock Stands are built with either a tough medal or steel framework, they are very easy to assemble and their strong support allows you to sway while you relax without the fear of collapsing. Also available are wooden stands that have a clean wooden finish for a more outdoorsy look. Hammock stands vary in size, color, and strength but are generally designed to hold up to 350-500 pounds and are around 13 feet long.
